More companies are discovering that photonics is key to making their product or application a lot faster, smarter and energy efficient. Researchers and enterprises in the Brainport area of the Netherlands have succeeded in putting a “system on a chip” at a price point where the use of light rather than electronics makes perfect commercial sense.
Until recently, the biggest bottleneck to making a photonics chip was simply the cost of making a prototype. Costs of € 85k for a single wafer were typical. But that’s changed!
Prototyping costs now 10 times cheaper The Multi Project Wafer approach has been pioneered in this part of the Netherlands. By building chips with standard generic components – and developing an easy to use design kit - fabrication costs have dropped to around €8k per wafer. That’s a price point which opens innovation to many more high-tech enterprises.
New Incentive to Innovate PhotonDelta, in partnership with JePPix and Brainport Development, is now launching a photonics chip incentive scheme. We’re reaching out to help global high-tech companies, large and small, design and build next-generation photonics chips specific to their business.
The goal is to help more companies discover this is the best way to innovate. It’s much faster, smarter and more effective to collaborate in a Multi-Project Wafer run than trying to go alone. It becomes a win-win for everyone.
Apply Now for the PIC Innovation Voucher If you’re planning to fabricate your photonics chip with companies in Brabant, you may qualify for a PIC Innovation voucher, worth up to € 4,250.00. This is half the cost of an MPW run. Apply to the PhotonDelta office to see if you qualify for one of the 60 Innovation vouchers to be awarded over the next 3 years. The scheme starts April 1st 2017. More details are outlined below.
