How to create an open innovation ecosystem? It's a question frequently asked to High Tech Campus Eindhoven's site management organization. Sjoerd Romme, professor in Entrepeneurship and Innovation at the Eindhoven University of Technology, wrote a whitepaper about this subject and took HTCE as case study to answer the question. We are proud to offer 'Creating a vibrant innovation ecosystem' as a free download.

Romme descibes how the Campus evolved to the smartest square kilometer in Europe over the last ten years. He spoke to a variety of people, including:

  • Henry Chesbrough - Professor and Executive Director at the Center for Open Innovation at Berkeley
  • Henk Volberda - Professor Strategic Management and Business Policy
  • Guido Dierick - CEO of NXP Netherlands

Key aspects of an open innovation ecosystem

Based on the interviews and his research, he identified five crucial aspects in our ecosystem that deliver a unique combination of benefits to residents of HTCE:

  1. Minimizing distances to facilitate direct interaction
  2. Informal networks and knowledge sharing
  3. Managing the ecosystem's diversity and reputation
  4. Connectors that initiate and manage collaboration
  5. Responsiveness to what residents need

Romme describes how these aspects are developed at HTCE and how the more than 160 companies benefit from being part of the ecosystem:

"First, it provides access to shared resources and facilities, to facilitate R&D and product development activities. Second, the HTCE involves an innovation community that enhances knowledge sharing between people at the campus. In this respect, the HTCE draws on a deep understanding of how it creates value for its residents." - Prof. Dr. Sjoerd Romme
