Remarkable things happen when knowledge and open collaboration meet

What do a US $200 million acquisition and the Brainport region have in common? Sapiens, a medical device company was founded on the High Tech Campus in 2011 as a spin-out of Royal Philips Electronics. In August 2014, Sapiens was acquired by medical technology giant Medtronic for a astonishing US $200 million. Science writer Jonathan Marks said it is a classic "textbook" example of a successful high-tech medical startup acquisition. He sees no reason as to why this region of the Netherlands cannot be the source of many more.

Sapiens SBS describes itself as a young, dynamic, ambitious, venture-capital backed start-up company, with a dedicated team that collaborates with several world-leading clinical partners. In the announcement of the acquisition, Medtronic stated: “Employees at the Eindhoven facility will continue to work toward bringing this technology to market. In the future, the site will serve as a global research and development center for Medtronic's Neuromodulation business, complementing our existing R&D operations.”

Ecosystem of open collaboration gives Sapiens a distinct advantage

The Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) technologies of Sapiens are not being developed overnight. A lot of advanced materials, different skills and technologies need to come together. It's also crucial to find the right partners for the next stage of development. This need to be experts with a deep understanding of the complex technologies involved. This is why it made sense for Medtronic to tap into the existing ecosystem that Sapiens has already established on the High Tech Campus Eindhoven. The Philips heritage, as well as connection with other Philips spin-outs gave Sapiens a very distinct advantage.

Collaboration between small and large companies, start-ups and specialised test facilities has more than once proven to be a key to success. All kinds of support services and knowledge clusters in the Brainport region are connected to the ecosystem of the High Tech Campus. Sapiens can therefore be considered as 'fresh proof' that remarkable things happen when knowledge and open collaboration meet.
